SOUTHERN ILLINOIS – Storms early this morning may be to blame for two fires in southern Illinois.

In Massac County, lightning may have caused a fire at St. John’s Church on Waldo Church Road between Metropolis and Brookport.

Massac County Emergency Management says the church caught fire around the time storms rolled in.

Massac County Fire received the call about the fire around 4:20 a.m. and responded. When firefighters arrived, they found the church fully involved. The fire caused heavy damage to the church. No injuries were reported.

In Du Quoin, firefighters responded to a building fire in the downtown area. It’s believed it started around the time storms rolled through town.

When firefighters arrived, flames and smoke were seen coming out of the roof of a three-story building.
