New England Patriots rookie QB Drake Maye was forced to leave Sunday’s game vs. the New York Jets with a head injury, later confirmed to be a concussion. Veteran QB Jacoby Brissett replaced Maye with 9:06 remaining in the second quarter.
As seen in footage posted on X, Maye took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Jets linebacker Jamien Sherwood while scrambling for an 18-yard gain early in the second quarter (no flag was thrown on the play). Â The rookie remained in the game for four more plays before being evaluated, and heading to the locker room.
The Patriots initially ruled May as ‘questionable’; but at halftime head coach Jerod Mayo confirmed that Maye would not be returning to the game, with the team officially announcing early in the second half that Maye suffered a concussion.  The rookie QB now will enter the NFL’s concussion protocol, and his status going forward is to be determined.
The Patriots (2-6) earning a 25-22 victory against the Jets after Rhamondre Stevenson’s rushing touchdown with just 22 seconds remaining.
