JOHNSTON CITY – An 84-year-old man was involved in a traffic incident on Illinois 37 near Stotlar Road between Marion and Johnston City Wednesday evening.

According to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were able to determine that the man didn’t know where he was or his actions and appeared to suffer from severe memory loss.

The man was taken by EMS out of an abundance of caution and his vehicle was released to his family who were called to the scene. No citations were issued. His name was not released.

Before the man was stopped, deputies saw him going north on Illinois 37 near Stotlar Road. He crossed the centerline and came to rest in the middle of the road. Heavy traffic was reported in the area.

Deputies tried to stop him, but the man failed to yield and left going north toward Johnston City.

Deputies thought the man was fleeing from them, but he stopped in the middle of the road and then left again. He did this several times with speed between 5 and 40 miles per hour.

Deputies and Johnston City Police were able to stop the man on Illinois 37 just north of Johnston City.
