MARION – The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating several reports of residents receiving fake calls from someone claiming to be a detective with the sheriff’s office saying they have a warrant for their arrest.
These calls are spoofing the caller ID information and appear to be coming from the sheriff’s office when in fact they are not.
There are multiple variations of the scam but each attempts to create an urgency requiring a payment to the scammer to resolve the matter.
During the reported calls, scammers have attempted to get money, tried to get the victim to meet them, and in most cases attempted to keep the victim on the phone while arranging to meet in person at their residence or another location.
Do not meet these scammers in person or agree to give them any money.
The Williamson County Sheriff’s Office does not solicit money over the phone and no cash bond is generally required in Illinois criminal cases.
If you receive a questionable call, please report the incident to the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office at 618-997-6541.
