MURPHYSBORO – A southern Illinois man has been convicted of residential burglary after a trial in Jackson County.

The Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office says sentencing for 60-year-old George D. Travis will take place later this year. He is facing between 4 to 15 years in prison with up to two years of mandatory supervised release.

Carbondale Police responded to a report of a residential burglary in progress in the 700 block of Pecan Street on April 23.

Police learned that a safe with several personal items had been taken from inside the home. The homeowner arrived home as the suspects were loading the safe into the back of a green pick-up truck and called police. The homeowner was able to give police a partial plate number. Police were able to locate a vehicle registered to a North Oakland Street address. Police went to that address and found Travis along with the dismantled safe and missing items inside his backpack.

Travis was taken into custody without incident and charged by the Jackson County State’s Attorney’s Office with residential burglary.
